When I was in 8th Grade, I used to sell sketches of superheroes or manga characters to my friends for a few bucks or some comics. One of the friends I used to draw for was a kid named Jason, who I was cool with despite how we used to tease each other mercilessly. After graduating Junior High, I never really saw or spoke to him outside of the occasional chance encounter in public. Last I saw Jason, it was at the New York Comic Con and he was moving to Arizona, so I figured I wouldn’t be bumping into him anytime soon. So, I was definitely surprised when on the Friday that Man of Steel premiered in theaters, I saw That Dude sitting across from me on the R train.
We caught up, trading stories about what we’ve been up to since 8th Grade ended. We talked about work and movies and Doctor Who, and then Jason told me the Big News: he was getting engaged to his girlfriend Katelyn! It’s weird to think that I’m at the point in my life where the people around me are starting to settle down; I’m still trying to move out of my Mom’s house.
Jason then made another proposal: he commissioned me to illustrate him proposing to his Bride-To-Be. Over the next couple of days we went back and forth about how the portrait would look and what would be in it, but I decided to keep it pretty simple, and romantic as fuck.
So, congratulations Jason and Katelyn! May you have a happy life together.
